I Think You Left Your Humility at Home
You know what really pisses me off? Pompous people. You know who I'm talking about. Those kids who know they're better than you and don't even try to pretend their not. They are so confident in themselves that their confidence overflows into rudeness, and disregard for others. I am currently talking about All County Orchestra. All County is seriously one of the highlights of my entire year, but there are little worms in it that almost spoil the whole apple at times. There's this kid--we'll call him Jerko-- who goes to BISFA, which is our local performing arts school, and although he didn't show up to auditions because he had chicken pox, they made an exception and let him audition anyway. First of all, they would NEVER make that exception for someone from one of the regular kids. But the BISFA kids always get special treatment. Second of all, he still only got 2nd chair, behind MF's and my friend JT who goes to our school and NOT BISFA and is seriously an amazing violinist, so we were all pretty happy and excited that JT beat those snotty BISFA kids. But Jerko still acts like HE'S the principal vioilinist, giving us fingering suggestions and pretending like he's in charge. URG!!! At one point, he says to the sectional teacher lady (who was really young and too nice to tell him to shut his pie hole) "You might want to explain the time signature to them."
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! "Them"!! As if the rest of us were just stupid little underlings who've never played the violin before and couldn't possibly manage to count in 7/4!! And HE's telling the INSTRUCTOR what she should be explaining to us!!!! I so wished that Mr. Price (that's our Orchestra teacher at school) would have been our sectional instructor, because he would have put that pompous Jerko in his place. That's the thing with BISFA kids: everyone around them is always telling them how amazing they are. They go to a school that caters specifically to their talents, so their teachers revere them, their parents applaud them, their peers stand in awe of them, and they have no one to bring them down to earth and tell them that they're not as amazing as they obviously think they are. Which frankly is stupid, because then you have a bunch of kids graduating from a performing arts school going out into the real world thinking that they're gonna get into the first big orchestra they audition for, or the first big time theater production they try out for. BUT THAT'S NOT WHAT THE REAL WORLD IS LIKE. In the real world, constant rejection is the name of the game. But in school, they've never been rejected before, and they don't know how to handle it. Which is honestly sad.
Anyway, so me and MF kept rolling our eyes at each other and making faces like "Who the heck does he think he is?" the whole rehearsal, and then during the break, MF goes, "We should go up to him and be like 'Um, excuse me, but I think you left something at home...Your humility!!'". And she's darn right. He needed a right good spanking.
Okay, I need to calm down. I'm being super harsh. But seriously, pompous people are the most intolerable of all humankind, and I thank my parents that they didn't raise me to be like that.
I'm gonna go now. Gotta watch Reign!!
