The Giving Tree

Tuesday night it was just one of those days. One of those days where I didn't want to do anything. So I went on Amazon and of course looked at some of the books. Then I saw a book from my childhood and I immediately became happy and looked at it. Then I remembered some other books and I looked up those and this created a lot of nostalgia. I thought about where and when I read those books for the first time. (If I could remember.) Then I saw the book The Giving Tree.
A few months ago I was hanging out with Leah and somehow we got on the topic of the poem The Giving Tree. I didn't remember reading it as a kid so Leah read it to me and we both were crying a little by the end of it. Then we laughed at each other but if you've never read that poem you need to read it. It's a beautiful poem that symbolizes a parent giving all they have to their child.
Then I started thinking about the books that I would read to my kids one day and then this turned into a journal entry, that turned in a letter to my kids. If I ever have any.

"My dear child,
Reading to you will probably be the best time of the day. I'm trying to imagine if the house would be loud or quiet. You're mom is not a singer but she is a devoted reader. I see myself giving you a bath and probably being soaked by the end of it because if you're anything like me you are a firm believer that water is not meant to be kept in the bath tub. I imagine taking you out and wrapping your little body in a towel and putting you in your pajama's. You or I would pick out a book and we would sit together in a rocking chair and I would read to you. A part of me wishes that you would pick up another book. The other part wishes that your little eyelids would close and I could go to bed. I guess that depends on the day. I see your room filled with books that I have mostly spoiled you with. Hopefully you will love books as much I do. I love you regardless but please love books. Like the giving tree I would let you swing from my branches, give you my apples to sell for money, let you cut my branches to make a house for your own family, cut me down entirely to build a boat and then when you're to old and I don't really have much to give you anymore you can sit and rest on my stump.  I know I haven't met you but you are one of the best things God has blessed me with.
Here's some of the books that I would read to you.
1. The Giving Tree (obviously.)
2. The Bearstein Bears books
3. Love You Forever, Robert Munsch
4. Goodnight Moon
5. The Wonderful Things You Will Be
6. Oh The Places You'll Go
7. Lily's Purple Plastic Purse
8. The Little Mermaid
Of course there will be many more.
Love,
Mom
