This or That Book Tag: DL

I have another post that I want to do, so this may be a double post day, but I also really want to this tag, so here it is:

1. Physical book or e-book?

I like them both--e-books are fantastic for reading in bed because you don't even have to turn any lights on and it's easier to maneuver a digital book while laying down, but as a rule I definitely prefer physical books, because it's just more fulfilling to actually own and hold a real live book than just some little blip in cyber space that happens to code for a book. I, like AB, enjoy the smell of books.  E-books don't really have a smell...

2. Audio or book in hand?

I remember in middle school we used to take all the "Learning Style" tests, and I always got the least amount of points for "Auditory Learner". I just have an incredibly hard time focusing on what's happening when someone's just talking and I can't see them. When I was little, my Mom would read novels to me and my brother out loud every night and I can't remember a single one because I could never pay attention. So in answer to the question, definitely book in hand. I wish I could concentrate better on audio books. That would make car rides a lot more fun. Now I just have to endure the inevitable headache that comes from reading a physical book during a car ride. Haha.

3. Paperback or hardcover?

Paperback. Those stupid flyleaves on hardcover books annoy me, so I always take them off, but then there's nothing interesting to look at on the cover. And softback books are just more comfortable to hold in your hands. And they're cheaper! I'm pretty frugal, so I'll sacrifice a bit of quality for a more reasonably priced softback book. Hardbacks are great too though. Definitely more durable that paperbacks.

4. Adult or Young Adult.

I like both genres equally. Young Adult books are probably what I read more often, but I enjoy Adult books just as much, as long as they're not too inappropriate (if I wanted all that sexual crap, I'd buy a Playboy, not a novel, okay?) But a lot of Young Adult books are inappropriate too, so you just have to take your chances. Not that I'm such a prude or anything, I just like a book to be focused on more than just physical relationships.

5. Series or standalone?

Absolutely, unequivocally I opt for standalones. Series are okay sometimes, but standalones just...I don't know, stand alone. What happens all too often with series is that the author wants to keep a story going because the response they got in the beginning was so positive that they want to continue to appeal to that audience, but then they end up making a story that started out really great turn into a boring, dragged out series that no one really likes anymore. Standalones tell a beautiful story that ends where it should and doesn't try to keep going when the story should truly be over. Leave well enough alone, I say.

6. Fantasy world or real life issues?

Real life issues, hands down. It's weird though: I like extremely realistic books, but I usually opt for a less realistic movie. I don't know why. I guess I want to read about people who are like me, but I want to actually see people whose lives are cooler/better/more exciting than my own.

7. Kindle, iPad, or other?
Well if we're talking in general, than "other": an actual book. But if we're talking about ereaders, than kindle, just cuz I've never tried anything else, and don't really want to.

8. Monster read or short and sweet?

No! Please don't make me read it!!!
Wow, my answers to these questions are vastly different than AB's. It's been previously proven that she and I are very very different types of readers. I am most definitely an advocate for the short and sweet book. The longest book I think I've ever read was The Host. I just really can't handle a book that keeps going on and on and on!!! Sometimes stories need to just end. I love it when books end! Then I can sit back and think about everything wonderful that happened during the book, and I can easily reread the book over and over again without having to make a month-worth's commitment to one stinking book. I don't know, I just love short books. I think it's better to say a lot in a few words than to say not very much in a billion words.

9. Starry-eyed romance or full of action?

Ummm..neither really. I like books that are very realistic, and in my personal life at least, there's not much action, and certainly no starry-eyed romance (at least not yet, heheheh). I like practical romance, and minimal action.

10. Curl up in a snuggie or bathe in the sun?

Definitely snuggie. Trying to read outside is so hard! Sometimes in the summer I sit on my porch and read or write, but there's little kids biking up and down the road, or a beautiful sunset, or people driving along the road, or little bunnies hopping through the yard, and there's just way too much to pay attention to besides the actual task at hand, and it makes it really hard to concentrate, like AB said. Curling up in a snuggie makes it really easy to completely lose yourself in the world of the book you're reading. Just last night I curled up in my pajamas on one of the chairs in the fire room and spent two hours just getting lost in The Glass Castle until suddenly I finished it! It was really fulfilling, and I didn't get distracted by bunnies or anything.

Well, that's my response to the This or That Book Tag. Stay tuned, I'll probably post again later today. :)
