Between the Notes Book Review
It's been a long time since I read a book in three days. I think that's a fairly good testament to how much I liked Between the Notes. It's also been a while since I read a book with a character I could really relate to, but I could definitely relate to Ivy. Things S.E. and Ivy have in common:
1. She moved. I haven't moved yet, but it'll be soon. I don't know whether it'll be six months soon or two years soon, but I definitely have been thinking about it a great deal, so I could relate to Ivy in that second-hand kind of way.
2. Among her favorite books are Stargirl and The Outsiders. Stargirl has always been one of my number ones, and The Outsiders held a special place in my heart for a solid few months of middle school. I was borderline obsessed.
3. She listens to songs like "Blackbird" and "Crazy Little Thing Called Love".
4. She is irrationally terrified of performing/speaking in public.
5. While her true love is the piano, she does a brief stint with the ukulele. ("I always thought of the ukulele as a wimp of an instrument, something to use in a pinch if you didn't have anything more substantial. But I love it now. And this guy really is amazing." (Referring to Jake Shimabukuro, ukulele player extraordinaire.))
6. She makes up silly songs on her piano/ukulele.
7. This line: "Standing in a puddle is always a nice place to discover your footwear isn't waterproof."
Between the Notes was a perfect, light read that kept me entertained the whole way through. It was like watching a movie, except I couldn't read the whole thing in two hours. There were a lot of stereotypical characters, but Sharon Huss Roat managed to pull it off without making the whole thing a cliche. Ivy is just one of those characters that, even though she manages to keep screwing up and being rather blind and stupid, you can't help but hope that everything works out for her. Overall, it was just what I needed, and I will definitely be reading it again at some point. Thanks again, AB, for this amazing book!!!
Day 765 Song Recommendation: "Sheets" Damien Jurado.
