Making a Mockery of Marriage
So just today I heard about this reality show called "Married at First Sight", which is, unfortunately, exactly what it sounds like. Three sets of strangers were matched up by some magical and vague process and AGREED to get married the first time they meet.
I seriously have so many issues with this show.
Number one, what kind of idiotic dumb butts would agree to such a ludicrous arrangement? It's literally just arranged marriage, except their spouses won't even chosen by their own parents but rather through some process that they explain super ambiguously in the first episode (according to one review on IMDb). Who can look at their life and say "Yep, I am totally fine with forfeiting my personal ambitions in order to marry a stranger and be shackled to them for the rest of my life (or inevitably until we get a divorce) and have cameras follow me around every single day and people probing me and asking questions about how my marriage to a complete stranger is going. Sounds great, sign me up." I mean, am I crazy for being appalled that people actually agreed to this?
Number two, why are there people WATCHING this trash??? It would be one thing if such a stupid show was proposed and aired for an episode or two, but was completely hated by the public because of how ridiculous and disgusting it is and was soon forced off the air. But the fact that it is wildly popular and has tons of viewers is a testament to the awful side of humanity. Like, there are so many better things to be watching than witnessing an arranged marriage of two strangers like they're some zoo exhibit. Is this seriously what our generation considers entertainment? Number three, this show is making a mockery of marriage. The description of the show is "Six people who agree to participate in an extreme experiment: Each covenants legal marriage with a complete stranger." Um, let me just get up on my soapbox for a minute here: Marriage is not a social experiment. The fact that there is a group of people who is taking the beautiful, everlasting, and extremely difficult institution of marriage and twisting it into an EXPERIMENT literally makes me sick to my stomach. It nullifies everything that makes marriage sacred and private by first making it a "let's see what happens" experience, and then broadcasting it for the whole world to watch for fun. I am so done with this idea of reality television. Reality is that marriage is something people ponder over for years and consider with extreme care and discretion because it's incredibly important and incredibly sacred. It's not just something that you should be allowed to flaunt around for people's entertainment! It's beautiful and mysterious and really, really hard and should be a private matter between consenting adults who actually know and love each other. There has to be a line drawn somewhere that says "this is no longer okay to show people". Personally, I draw the line at "Married at First Sight".
