Where Have All the Flowers Gone?

Day 278 Song Recommendation: "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" by Peter, Paul & Mary. My mom recommended this song to me. It's one of those hippy-era war-protest songs, but it's subtle and universal. URG THE COMPUTER IS BEING SO SLOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where have all the flowers gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the flowers gone?
Long time ago

Where have all the flowers gone?
Young girls have picked them every one
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?

Where have all the young girls gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the young girls gone?
Long time ago

Where have all the young girls gone?

Gone for husbands every one
Oh, when will they ever learn?

Oh, when will they ever learn?

Where have all the husbands gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the husbands gone?
Long time ago

Where have all the husbands gone?
Gone for soldiers every one
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?

Where have all the soldiers gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the soldiers gone?
Long time ago

Where have all the soldiers gone?
Gone to graveyards, every one
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?

Where have all the graveyards gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the graveyards gone?
Long time ago

Where have all the graveyards gone?
Gone to flowers, every one
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?

Where have all the flowers gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the flowers gone?
Long time ago

Where have all the flowers gone?
Young girls have picked them every one
Oh, when will they ever learn?
Oh, when will they ever learn?

The song is simple, yet haunting. It begs the question, Is war worth it? It is hard to be definitive about things like war; to say, War is always wrong or War is always right. There are always circumstances and reasons and morals and values and right and wrong. Many times those reasons are not the right reasons. A while ago, I tried my hand at writing a dystopian novel. But I stopped when I came to the question: What are these people fighting over? What do people make war over? What is worth making war over? I could think of very few things worth killing people over. So yes, in a way, I am a hippy. "Make love, not war" type thing. But on the other hand, there are things I would fight for. I would fight for my family, for the ones I love. I would fight for my right to free speech, my right to be a free individual. I would fight to defend oppressed people who are incapable of defending themselves. But other things I would not fight over, at least not until it came to the point where my family or freedom were being infringed upon, or another peoples' freedoms were being taken away and the only way to solve the problem was to go to war.
But what is the likelihood that I will ever be given the sole responsibility of declaring war against another country? Not likely at all. It is likely, however, that I will be faced with the choice to argue with someone to the point that we are both miserable, or I can be the bigger person and let it go. I don't have to be all for war, or all against it. Sometimes I just have to choose my battles.
