Hipster or Purist?
Ah, December the 26th: the international day of eating leftovers, returning unwanted presents, and redeeming gift cards. For me it was like a second Christmas, only this time I gave myself the presents with my Christmas cash and gift certificates. If I had a YouTube channel, I would definitely be one of those people who makes haul videos. I always love getting home from a good long shopping day and dumping out all of my bags on my bed and looking at all the junk I bought. I don't consider myself to be a materialistic person, but I am a total sucker for good bargains and thrift store stuff.
I've also discovered that I am a total hipster. Well, actually, according to two different "Are You A Hipster" quizes I just took online, I'm not, but I'm not convinced. Okay, I'll revise my conclusion: I'm not a hipster, par se, but rather a purist. My closet it filled to the brim with secondhand/thrift-store/hand-me-down clothing. My room is a conglomerate of yardsale/free-bin/used-book-sale/bargain-bin/thrift-store knick-knacks, books, and unecessary junk. I'm obsessed with antiques, and obsolete technology (ex., I have an antique Victrola case with a 1960's typewriter inside, and my vinyl record player on top). I write everything in notebooks or with my typewriter (well, the one that works, teehee) before transferring it to the computer. I rock out to vinyl while laying on my bed with throwback blankets and antique bedposts while reading AN ACTUAL BOOK. Okay, not going to lie, I love my Kindle, but mostly for internet surfing purposes, and not actually reading. Anyway, yeah, I love, love, love antiques and thrift store finds, and I could go on and on and on about my admiration for old postcards, vintage cameras, outdated clothing and jewelry, and old photographs, but I won't bore you with too much gushing.
Now for something slightly contradictory about myself: as much as I love old stuff, I really don't like old films. I haven't seen a ton, but what I have seen was enough to turn me off. I just really don't like the bad film quality and not quite up-to-par acting skills. I'm sorry, I'm sorry! I know how many people love old movies, and I also know that I'm the movie blogger, so it seems pretty scandalous that there's a large section of film that I don't like, but there you have it. I especially cannot get into black and white movies. Black and white photos are amazing and I love them with a passion, but film is totally different. I need to see the colors! I need to experience the hues of life that existed during the time period of the film! I just do! I enjoyed Ben-Hur, and The Sound of Music and I like modern remakes of old films, like Sabrina, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and of course The Painted Veil, but I don't know, as a rule, I'm just not a fan of old movies. Maybe someday I'll develop a love for early film, but for now, I'll stick to modern film, thanks. Speaking of movies...
Movie Recommendation: Penelope. I remember when this movie was just coming out and the previews were on TV. I had thought it looked really weird and until yesterday, I hadn't really given any thought to watching it, but I saw that the full movie was on YouTube, so I watched it (at like literally 12AM) and it was really good! A tad confusing at parts, but the overall message was a positive one. There's just something so cute about this movie...and by that I mean James McAvoy. No, just kidding, I mean that the movie itself is cute. Although McAvoy has always had a special place in my heart. He's a handsome chap, and a great actor. Anyway, I really enjoyed this feature, and I think it's one that almost everyone can enjoy. Plus, it's interesting to see little Wednesday Adams playing a pig-faced princess. Haha. (Correction, apparently, she's an "aristocratic heiress", not a princess. Same dif.).
