What is 'beautiful'?
I found out about Nadia Ilse about a week ago, a 14 year old girl who had plastic surgery with parent's consent.
Here's her story...
Nadia had been bullied since she was a little kid. She said that she used to be happy and talkative. Until one day she went to school and a girl told her that she had the biggest ears she had ever seen. Nadia was speechless what do you say to a person like that? That was the beginning of everything. Nadia begged her parents to let her get her ears pinned back. The problem was is that her parents couldn't afford it because her brother has cerebral palsy and her mother had been laid off. Her Mom went on the internet and found a website called the little baby face foundation. This foundation helps children who were born with facial birth defects. They offered to pay to have her ears pinned back. When Nadia went to have the surgery done the plastic surgeon said that they should shave her chin a bit and 'fix' her nose.
How much did all of this cost?
$40,000 it was all for free.
I'm not saying that Nadia's story isn't sad and I can see why she did what she did. I can't help but not agree with the choice that she made. Bullying is a serious topic and not a lot of people take it seriously. To be honest with you I think Nadia looked beautiful the way that she was and people can be cruel. especially in middle school.
Also just because she got plastic surgery doesn't mean that her problems with self-esteem isn't over. One day she will just be used to who she, the changes she got won't feel new anymore. Will she need another surgery to 'fix' something she doesn't feel okay with? Also what was wrong with her chin and nose? Did the doctor just suggest it to get the profit? He was getting 40,000 dollars out of this deal.
Plus the little baby foundation gives to kids who are born with birth defects. Nadia could have been fine without the surgery, there was no medical reason for her to do it. Some child or children could have benefited from that 40,000 dollars more than she did.
Don't get me wrong plastic surgery can be a great thing when it's used in the right way. For instance if someone is in a car accident and needs face reconstruction I can see why they would have surgery for something like that.
So what's the solution? Is Nadia the exception or is it okay for 14 year old girls, maybe even younger to get plastic surgery with parent's consent? When you are bullied or don't feel beautiful should you have it 'fixed'? My opinion
? Don't fix what isn't broken.
Nadia you were beautiful just the way you were.
