Was Gatsby Great?
The Great Gatsby is arguably one of the greatest novels in America Literature. It shows what the twenties was really like. The ridiculous insane parties, rich people having what they don't deserve, people breaking laws just so they can drink alcohol. In the Great Gatsby, Gatsby watches the corruption, people throwing away their money playing poker and drinking away the night, doing things they will probably regret later. You can't help but ask the question was Gatsby great?
'Great' can be measured in very different ways. The definition of 'great' is "of an extent, amount or intensity considerably above normal or average."
I believe that Gatsby had the ability to be great.
I think we can all agree that Gatsby had his flaws. Gatsby waited around for five years for a woman that he couldn't have. Gatsby believes that if he has Daisy his American dream will be complete. The problem is, is that Gatsby needs Daisy to say that she never loved her asshole of a husband Tom. Which Daisy can't do because she did love Tom and I believe that even though she loved Gatsby she loves Tom too.
Gatsby didn't need Daisy, maybe if he had moved away or found another woman better than that spoiled brat he could have been great. It may not have been the dream that he had hoped for but it's the one that he needed. Gatsby wasted his time throwing parties where people he didn't even know drank his alcohol and spread rumors about him. The reason he nobody came to his funeral except Nick because Nick was his only true friend or maybe he was the only one who had the decency to go. Everyone else saw him as a dead guy who had thrown good parties.
Gatsby surrounded himself with people who were selfish, who had money and people who only cared about themselves. More than fifty percent of the characters only cared about themselves and what was best for them. That could never end well for Gatsby or for anybody for that matter.
This may sound bad but Gatsby had to much hope. Hope in the green light, a dream that was so close to becoming reality. Maybe that's why he believed in it so much. Gatsby was blind, he could only think of one fate for himself.
Gatsby could have lived, if he had told the truth. If he revealed what Daisy had really done she would have gotten shot and what she deserved. That's what makes the story so sad but true. In life bad people like Daisy and Tom don't get what they deserved and maybe that's death or the corruption that they had started would backfire on them. Instead good people like Gatsby take the punishment. So in my opinion Gatsby wasn't great. Like I said before he had the ability to be great. If he had made different choices.

"Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgiastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then but that's no matter--tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther...and one fine morning--so we beat on boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past." -Nick Caraway
